The Anxious Empath

Do you know how exhausting it is to drag luggage around an airport? I once checked my luggage with the airline and only had my purse. It was the most freeing experience to walk through an airport without lugging all that weight behind me. I had never done that before because I liked to control where my luggage was. If I had it with me, it was safe and it wouldn’t get lost. I wouldn’t have to figure out how to find the luggage retrieval area. But was it really me being controlling, or was it my anxiety? Probably both.

An empath often works harder than necessary because they think this will be helpful or create less work for someone else, or whatever other excuse they find. But actually, they are causing more work for themselves. This causes pain and energy drain, and sometimes even arguments. Carry only what you need—and I’m not just talking about luggage.

Supernatural Blue Light Special

One thing that is quite unusual about intuitive empaths is that supernatural phenomena seems to follow them. Many intuitive empaths have had various supernatural experiences, from near death experiences to out-of-body experiences to the paranormal, but this isn’t necessarily a prerequisite that determines whether you are an intuitive empath or not.

I’m the person who continually breaks vacuum cleaners, of all things. I pop lightbulbs and streetlights as if I have a superpower. Right now, our camera on our newish car reads fuzzy, and my laptop keeps giving me squiggly lines. The manager at the local phone store knows me by name, and I can’t wear a watch without having a ridiculous amount of backup batteries. It’s called “slider phenomenon,” a term coined by paranormal author Hilary Evans.5 This electrical phenomenon happens when a person goes through intense emotions such as anger, deep sadness, or even overwhelming excitement. An empath tends to be more prone to this gift/curse.

Then there are the paranormal experiences. An empath draws people to their light like a moth to a flame, and they do the same for the other side. Just as an empath is an amazing listener and loving caregiver to the living, those who have passed away see the empath’s light and seek it out. Without proper understanding, many empaths are afraid of this, and they try to turn it off. Some succeed.

I’m not sure if you are as old as I am, but back in the day, Kmart was a bustling discount chain store, a lot like a Walmart. Every so often, a clerk would get on the loudspeaker via a corded telephone and announce that there was a blue light special. The clerk would announce the aisle and sometimes what it was. Like, “Hi, Kmart customers. This is Kristy and I’m here by the women’s socks. We are having a blue light special. Right now, every pair of socks you buy, you get two free. Come get your socks and your coupon. I’ll only be here for five more minutes.”

Sounds like I
